Second Chance for the Sword of the Stars 2
Bugs became an inevitable part of every PC or console game. The developers often release patches to fix them, but as for Sword of the Stars 2, this rule didn’t work. The product was obviously not ready for the use, but it was released, and the gamers got a galaxy nightmare instead of a promising strategy. Kerberos Productions apologized for such inconvenience and released the game once again a year after, but the fixed errors only reveal the mediocrity of the game process.
7 unique races are available at the start of the game, each with their own characteristics, skills and space traveling speed. The game mechanics is simple as it includes the standard conditions for winning by occupying the definite part of the map or by the surviving at the end.
There are 2 maps, one of them demonstrates the space, and the other one is for combat mode. The user begins the journey with discovering new planets and looking for any forms of life there. The next phase is colonizing the place and getting more inhabitants and income. It’s also the right time to think about the defense system of the colony and developing commerce relationships with other planets.
The missions vary from each other by the aim. Some of them are just for researching space, while the others are for attacking or defending the colonies. The ships can be manually controlled and avoid the enemy’s fleet by spinning around. The developers integrated the constructor, which allows designing the customized ships, but it negatively influences the pacing.
The navigation is poorly and illogically done as the players need time to find the correct buttons at the small menu panel and get used to the control system. The mission can’t be cancelled, which makes it impossible to defend the colony from unexpected attack while traveling to another planets. The statistics also doesn’t work properly and doesn’t show the data about enemy fleet.
The Sword of the Stars 2: Enhanced Edition is not successful, as well as its first release. Unfortunately, the game structure remains the same and lacks well thought-out realization, which makes attracting any fans of the genre problematic.
